TIG welding isn’t one of the easiest things to do. It is a lot more difficult and complex as compared to the other forms of welding. It requires a lot of skill and precision. But there are a few particular steps that might help you understand the whole process of setting it up and TIG welding. Not just the welding part of it. Maintenance of the welded part is also important.
TIG Welder Set Up
The choice of electrode is going to take you a long way in the process of TIG welding. Tungsten alloys are the most popular choice for welding metals. There is a wide range of alloys to be chosen. The choice of electrode will depend entirely on the metal you weld. For instance, aluminum has a requirement of pure tungsten rods as electrodes.
Grinding the electrode
The next step in the process of setting up the welder would be grinding the electrode in order to have a rounded tip. Having a rounded tip will help you in the process of heating the material. When you have a rounded point, you will get a smoother arc that is smaller in size and thus well navigated. It is a lot more convenient working with a rounded tip rather than a pointed one.
Setting up the electrode
Up next is the process of inserting the electrode to start the welding process. Your apparatus will come with an electrode holder. You need to pull the cap and unscrew the electrode holder. Once that is done, you need to put in the rod and screw it back again. If you are using aluminum, then tungsten rods will have to be placed in that road. The electrode rod must be at least a quarter inch away from the protective sheath.
Every TIG welding apparatus will have specific settings that need to be adjusted for correct functioning of the device. You will be given three different electricity options, namely AC, DCEP and DCEN. If you are dealing with aluminum, then the best choice in front of you would be AC. You could increase the value on the penetration scale in order to have a more intense and strong welding process.
Using the gas
Up next, the gas. The gas needs to be turned on in order continue with the welding process. The choice of gas is also important and will determine the effectiveness of the welding process. In case of aluminum, the gas in question should be argon. There are specific argon and carbon dioxide mixtures that prove effective for several metals. If you choose the right gas, you will also be able to prevent corrosion and rusting of the metal. You cannot have your metal getting oxidized or rusted during the process.
The welding table
The welding table might be more important than what you could think. Using a metallic platform for the welding process could come in handy. A metallic table would work best. This needs to be large and spacious for best results. If you are not too keen on a metallic table or don’t have access to one, then a metallic sheet would work just fine. A metallic platform is going to give you a stronger weld.
Just setting up the apparatus is not enough to have a good welding process. As the person operating the welding machine, you need to be well protected. For TIG welding, you are prone to sunburns on the skin that might be detrimental for your health. Wearing gloves is an absolute must and more precisely, thick leather gloves. Also, a full sleeved shirt is going to do wonders. Add to that, wear a helmet and a shoe that completely covers your feet. Use bright flash lights to see the surroundings through your helmet.
Holding the electrode
This is a much underrated point here. How you hold the electrode is important. Always make sure that the electrode is in your dominant hand. This ensures that it can always move around freely. If you are more comfortable using your right hand, it would be best to hold the electrode in your right hand.
The final step in this list is the actual welding process. The main aim here is to allow the current and heat on to the electrodes for welding the metal. This can be done by pressing onto the foot pedal. How do you know if your welding is on the right track or not? Just check the concentration of the metal. If it becomes a fluid gradually, you are doing a great job. Also make sure the electrode is away from the metal. If it comes into contact by chance, stop the machine to prevent an accident.
